PCS-SEG Luncheon Lecture – CSUB Graduate Students – Kari Hochstatter, Cindy Rodriguez & Craig Hulsey

We are pleased to have our next technical luncheon on Thursday, April 8th at noon. This virtual luncheon will be held through Zoom.

This month is a special session featuring three speakers from the graduate geology program at Cal State Bakersfield. Typically, our society hosts an annual poster session with CSUB’s geology students. With the Covid-19 restrictions still in place, the society has decided to invite a handful of Master’s candidates to present brief virtual talks on their current research. The speakers and titles of their talks are listed below.

Additionally, the society will be awarding our annual field camp scholarship to this year’s CSUB Outstanding Geology Student.

Talks:

Kari Hochstatter – “X-ray Diffraction Mineralogic Analyses on Core Samples of the San Joaquin Basin, California: A Pilot Study for Kaolinite to Dickite Diagenesis”

Kari Hochstatter Abstract & Bio

Cindy Rodriguez – “The Impact of the 2016 Erskine Fire on Soil Properties”

Cindy Rodriguez Abstract & Bio

Craig Hulsey – “Geochemical Analysis of a New Lunar Meteorite and Connection to Lunar Source Terrain”

Craig Hulsey Abstract & Bio

Christof Stork – “Addressing land seismic data quality issues that cannot be easily fixed by huge fold”

Please join us for the PCS-SEG monthly luncheon on Wednesday, March 10th. This will be a virtual meeting held using the Zoom meeting platform.

The meeting will feature Christof Stork of Land Seismic Noise Specialists. The title of his talk is “Addressing land seismic data quality issues that cannot be easily fixed by huge fold”.

Abstract
Interpreters can be frustrated by that land seismic data is often 10-100x noisier than marine data.  There is room for optimism since source and receiver counts for land seismic data are each recently going up by about 10x. This increases total fold by about 100x, which is a revolution.  But, there are still some significant noise issues the huge fold does not fix well:  1) consistent wavelet distortion of the near surface, 2) near surface scattering, 3) guided waves, 4) 3C noise, and 5) acquisition access issues.  Because of the competitive & heuristic nature of land seismic acquisition and processing, these topics have been R&D starved.  I will demonstrate the issues and show there is potential for significant technology improvements that are complementary with the new high fold data.

Christof Stork graduated with a Ph.D. in geophysics from Caltech in 1988 and then a Postdoc at Stanford.  He has been involved with 5 startup companies, of which 4 1/2 were successful.  Christof has been a leader in reflection tomography, wave equation migration, FWI, and land acquisition considerations.  Christof has twice had a measurable impact of greater than $1 billion on the industry with Wave Equation migration and RTM.

Andres Chavarria – “Geophysical Distributed Sensing within Instrumented Assets”

Please join us for the PCS-SEG monthly luncheon on Thursday, January 14th. This will be a virtual meeting held using the Zoom meeting platform.

The meeting will feature Andres Chavarria, Oilfield Services Technical Director at OptaSense. The title of his talk is “Geophysical Distributed Sensing within Instrumented Assets”.

Abstract
Reservoir monitoring with distributed acoustic sensing has proven an effective cost saving tool for various assets in a wide range of basins. Using fiber optic that often times is deployed for production monitoring purposes provides geoscientists with low cost tools to conduct measurements like seismic, microseismic and strain.

Here we show recent examples of DAS seismic projects where fiber for monitoring different assets was used to monitor reservoir changes. We focus on time lapse applications including steam and water injection, CO2 storage as well as passive microseismic and earthquake monitoring.

Bio
Andres Chavarria is OptaSense’s  Oilfield Services Technical Director. His current focus is the use of distributed sensing fiber optic data for engineering and geoscience applications.

He has a background on borehole seismology (MS and VSP) and was previously the Geophysical Processing Manager at OptaSense, SR2020 and Paulsson. He has conducted work in other areas of geophysics including geothermal, mining and groundwater. He holds an Engineering Degree on Geophysics from the National University of Mexico and a PhD Degree on Geophysics from Duke University.
